Daily itinerary
Day 1-Flight departure from NY (or your closest major city) to Madrid.
Day 2 – Touch down in the grand capital of Madrid, with roots dating back to the ninth century AD. Pass the Royal Palace & Plaza Mayor (the oldest part of the city) to sense the ambiance of one of Europe’s once-great empires. Visit Our Lady of Peace Church, served by the ICKSP. Overnight in Madrid.
Day 3 – Travel northeast to Zaragoza in the ancient historical region of Aragón to visit Our Lady of the Pillar Basilica, built on the spot where the holy Virgin Mother bilocated, in 40 AD, to meet with St. James the Greater, Missionary to Spain. She asked for a chapel and left him with a marble pillar and an image of herself that the angels had made for her to be placed inside. The first chapel was built soon after, and faithful people have come for nearly 2000 years to venerate the Blessed Virgin under the title of Our Lady of the Pillar. Leaving Zaragoza, travel to the Franciscan Monastery of the Immaculate Conception in Agreda, the birthplace of Venerable Sr. Maria, 17th-century Abbess, mystic, and first evangelizer of America. Here rests her incorrupt body. In the Museum are originals of some of the 14 books she authored, including the “Mystical City of God: the Life of the Virgin Mary.” Discover the miracle of her bilocation to the Native American Indians of the Southwest territories (present-day New Mexico & Texas), some 500 times, from 1620 to 1631, bringing rosaries and other devotionals, catechizing and tending the sick. When missionaries first arrived in the territory soon after, they discovered a whole nation of Jumano Indians begging for baptism. They learned of a ‘Lady in Blue’, who flew over the ocean to tell of the love of God. When Sr. Maria was investigated, it was found that her detailed accounts corroborated with the natives. See vestments she embroidered with birds and wildflowers of Texas. Evening in Soria.
Day 4 – It is a day to honor the heroes of the Reconquista, the era when Spain took back their lands after centuries of Moorish occupation. First stop – Burgos Cathedral, burial place of El Cid, champion of the 11th Century Reconquista. Covadonga is next, in the Cantabrian Mountain Range, where Don Pelayo won the first victory of the Reconquista. Located at the gateway to Picos de Europa Nat’l Park, Covadonga Basilica and cave have long been places of pilgrimage, with Pelayo’s tomb and an ancient image of Mary. Overnight in Cangas de Onís.
Day 5 – Travel east to Oviedo to see a magnificent 9th-century cathedral where the Sudarium is kept and exposed three times a year. Continue into the majestic mountains and forests of Galicia. Overnight in the medieval town of Sarria, the perfect Camino starting point to obtain the Compostela.
Day 6 – Buen Camino! Receive your pilgrim passport and set off on foot, bike (available to rent), (*or taxi), through Galicia’s rolling hillsides, shady oak and chestnut forests, and medieval villages to Portmarin. Remember to get your pilgrim passport stamped twice a day. (13.3 miles)
Day 7 – Walk steadily uphill through the towns of Ligonde & Vilachá, crossing over the Miño river valley to Palas de Rei. See “Vilar de Donas” church, one of the finest examples of Romanesque art on the Camino. (15.4 miles)
Day 8 – Walk slightly downhill to Melide, passing through the quaint villages of Casanova and Leboreiro, via an ancient Roman road. ( 9 miles).
Day 9 – Head off into the countryside, along a forest track, a few hamlets, and then an uphill stretch to Arzua. Visit a 14th-century Gothic chapel and experience a world-famous local cheese. Overnight in Arzúa. (8.6 miles)
Day 10 – This shaded section of the Camino will pass through villages, tranquil chestnut forests, and streams before reaching Amenal. (13.8 miles)
Day 11 – Our final 10 miles pass through the lovely town of Lavacolla, where pilgrims traditionally washed in the river. Tall eucalyptus trees line the way to Monte Gozo, and from there, you can see our goal – the Cathedral of St. James in Santiago de Compostela! Make the final descent to the tomb of St. James. There are few feelings in the world like arriving at Praza de Obradoiro in front of the cathedral after walking the Camino. Pick up your Compostela, an accreditation written in Latin from the Church to pilgrims who prove they have walked 100km (or traveled on horseback) 200km to Santiago de Compostela. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela.
Day 12 – Board our motorcoach and head south to Avila, the medieval city of Santa Teresa, 16th Century Abbess, mystic and reformer of the Carmelite Order. Mid-afternoon arrival. Visit San José Monastery (1st convent of the Discalced Carmelite Reform) and La Encarnación (where she lived for thirty years) before founding her first monastery in 1562. Here Our Lord came to her and asked who she was.”I am Teresa of Jesus”, she said. Our Lord replied, “I am Jesus of Teresa.” Stop at the roadside spot where she and her brother tried to run away to Africa to become martyrs in battle with the Moors. Depart for nearby Madrid. Overnight near the airport.
Day 13 – Fly home from Madrid.
