Daily itinerary

Sep. 14Thursday – Morning departure on a non-stop flight from LA to Montreal. Mid-afternoon arrival in the French-Canadian Province of  Quebec. Four hundred years ago France claimed this vast wilderness, sending missionaries to convert the Native Americans and plant the seeds of Catholicism in “New France”. To this day, the influence of France is everywhere in Quebec, especially in the architecture, food, language, signage, and traditions of its people. Our first stop will be at St. Francis Xavier Mission in Kahnawake, just south of Montreal, to visit the burial place of St. Kateri Tekakwitha. Born in Auriesville, NY, in 1656, ten years after the martyrdom of St. Isaac Jogues, Kateri embraced the faith introduced to her by the Black Robe Jesuit missionaries and fled north to the Canadian mission. She was known as the “Lily of the Mohawks” for her great work with the natives and the heroic suffering she endured before her early death. Evening arrival and check-in at the Pavillon Jean XXIII Guesthouse of St. Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal in Montreal (3 nights).

Friday -A day in Montreal, the world’s second-largest French-speaking city after Paris. Enjoy a walk along Old Town’s Boardwalk to visit the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Montreal (c.1820), with its exquisite Gothic-Renaissance architecture. Visit Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours, one of the oldest churches in the city, with a history dating back to 1655. This chapel was often visited by sailors to pray before they were shipped out for duty. Overlooking the Port of Montreal, 19th Century sailors would stop in to thank Our Lady for her “good help” on their sea voyages, and since then it came to be known as the “Sailor’s Church.” See the tomb of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, 17th Century founder of the Congregation of Notre Dame, who rallied the colonists of New France to build this great church. Visit a museum dedicated to her and the early history of Montreal with artifacts pre-dating the colonists.

Saturday – A retreat-style day at the Oratory of St. Joseph, the world’s largest shrine dedicated to the foster father of Our Lord. Situated on the slopes of Mt. Royal, this shrine fulfills the dream of St. Andre Bessette, a humble lay brother and doorkeeper. Multitudes of miracles were attributed to his unfailing confidence in St. Joseph’s intercession. He died in 1937 and was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. Visit the Votive Chapel, Crypt Church, an exhibit on the life of Brother André, the Basilica, St. André Bessette Chapel, Blessed Sacrament Chapel, and the tomb of Brother André. Enjoy leisure time for quiet prayer and a visit to the shrine gift shop.

Sunday – Morning departure northeast along the St. Lawrence River for Trois-Rivieres. Afternoon arrival and visit to the Shrine of Notre-Dame-du-Cap (“Our Lady of the Cape”), Canada’s National Shrine to the Blessed Mother, located in the majestic region of Mauricie.  Standing on the shore of the St. Lawrence River, Our Lady of the Cape Shrine welcomes pilgrims annually to pray at the oldest standing Canadian chapel, with origins dating back to 1635 when Jesuit missionaries first landed here and built a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. Visit the chapel and the new basilica and learn of the miracle of the Ice Bridge witnessed by Blessed Fr. Frederic in 1888. Evening arrival and check-in at our hotel in Trois-Rivieres.

Monday – Morning departure north for the town of St. Anne-de-Beaupre, to the St. Lawrence River at the foothills of the Laurentian Mountains. Stop at Montmorency Falls, Quebec’s natural treasure before our late afternoon arrival in St. Anne-de-Beaupre to check in at our hotel near the Shrine  of St. Anne. Check-in at our hotel near the shrine for three nights. Nightly Rosary & Candlelight procession.

Tuesday – Full-day excursion to the 400-year-old capital of Quebec City, the only walled city north of Mexico. Sprawling across cliff-tops ascending from the banks of the St. Lawrence River, Quebec City has a dramatic skyline outlined by the turrets of the famous Chateau Frontenac. Take a funicular ride from the Upper Town to Lower Town’s Place Royale; the original trading post of Samuel de Champlain, who founded the city in 1608. As the first French settlement in North America, Old Quebec is truly reminiscent of  18th Century France. Time at leisure to walk along its cobblestone streets lined with stone houses, age-old churches, quaint shops, and open-air cafes. Overnight in St. Anne-de-Beaupre.

Wednesday – A retreat-style day at the Shrine of St. Anne! Pilgrims have been coming here since 1658 to implore the favor of the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandmother of Our Lord. Visit the basilica where for hundreds of years, pilgrims have left their prayers at the base of the miraculous image of St. Anne. See the tomb of Ven. Alfred Pampalon, patron of those with addictions. Enjoy free time for prayer and a visit to the gift shop.

Thursday – Morning check-out for Quebec City Airport for our flight departure to Los Angeles (with one connection). Late afternoon arrival at the  Los Angeles Airport (LAX).
