Daily itinerary

Day 1-Arrival in Mexico City   Mid-afternoon flight from San Francisco (or your city of departure) to Mexico City. Evening arrival; Check-in at Villa Quijote next to the Shrine.

Day 2 – Our Lady of Guadalupe The focus of today’s tour will be Colonial Mexico City and the Guadalupe Shrine on Tepeyac Hill. Visit the Plaza of Three Cultures, which has landmarks representing three historical periods:pre-Columbian (Aztec pyramids), Spanish Colonial (17th- century Church), and the independent nation of today (a skyscraper). Holy Cross College is flanking the square; the first European school of higher learning in the Americas. The Guadalupe Shrine is next. First enter the Basilica to see the Tilma of St. Juan Diego, on which the Holy Virgin imprinted her image on Dec. 12, 1531. Visit a museum with religious art offered by pilgrims. Ascend Tepeyac Hill, the site of the four apparitions. Visit a church at the summit consecrated to St. Michael the Archangel. As protector of Our Lady, it is believed that he carried the portrait of the Virgin that was imprinted on the Tilma. The Carmelites presently reside here. Marvel at frescoes narrating the apparitions and terraced gardens with statues of the Aztecs meeting the missionaries. Visit the Holy Water Well Chapel & the Indian Chapel. See the exterior of the original Basilica. Attend a lecture by a licensed expert on the Tilma to learn of recent revelations about it.

Day 3-Cristeros & Ancient Mexico Today, we will commemorate the Cristeros; priests and lay people who gave their lives for the Catholic Faith during the anti-clerical revolution that spread through Mexico from 1926 to 1929. The first stop will be at the Church of la Sagrada Familia, where the mortal remains of the great Jesuit, Blessed Miguel Pro, rest. Undercover, Fr. Pro offered Holy Mass and the sacraments until the day of his arrest. His legend grew as the priest the army couldn’t catch. He was finally caught, arrested, and executed by firing squad (without trial). Standing with outstretched arms, a cross in one hand and a rosary in the other, his last words were: Viva Cristo Rey. Visit the martyrdom site and a museum. We may meet his great-nephew, Fr. Humberto Pro. Historical Mexico City is next to visit the Plaza de la Constitución (Zocolo Square). Here, we can see the ruins of Templo Mayor (the ancient Aztec Empire’s main temple) and the Nat’l. Palace.  Visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, the resting place of Juan Zumaraga,  the first bishop of Mexico, and the one to whom Juan Diego ran and unfurled his Tilma. St. Francis Monastery, headquarters of the first 12 Franciscan missionaries who received the papal mandate to evangelize “New Spain’, will be our last stop.

Day 4 – Tlaxcala Excursion – The town of San Miguel del Milagro will be the first stop. Here, St. Michael the Archangel appeared three times to 17-year-old Diego Lazaro in the 100th anniversary year of the Guadalupe apparitions. St. Michael directed him to spring with curative waters and told of Heaven’s wish for a church at the site. When miracles were reported, the local bishop built the church. Ocotlan Shrine is next, where the holy Virgin appeared to Juan Diego Bernardino in 1541, ten years after the apparitions at Tepeyac Hill. Another young convert and an altar server, Juan, was going to collect natural water for his ailing family during a smallpox epidemic. A beautiful lady appeared, diverting him to another healing spring. Later, he found a statue of the same lady in a tree. The same statue is in the local church today. Finally, visit Assumption Cathedral to venerate relics of the first 3 martyrs of America.

Day 5 – Mexico’s mystic & site of the 5th apparition   Drive to El Altillo to honor another Cristeros martyr, Bl. Conchita Cabrera, a wife, mother, widow, foundress of a religious order, and a mystic. Visit a museum dedicated to her and meet with the Sisters of the Cross. When she defended the church from being set on fire, she was shot at and fatally wounded. Like the other Cristero martyrs, her final words were Viva Cristo Rey. Visit Tulpetlac, the 5th apparition site, where Juan Diego’s sick uncle, Juan Bernardino, was cured.

Day 6 – Return Home – Morning free. Early afternoon transfer to Mexico City Airport for our return flight home—evening arrival.
