Purple Scapular
The Purple Scapular or the Scapular of Benediction and Protection was given in 1878 to the French holy woman and stigmatist, Marie-Julie Jahenny, by Our Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary, in an ecstasy. It offers protection from terrible chastisments and calamites and has numerous graces and promises associated with it. The scapular, although it can be worn or carried, is usually displayed in one’s home. This lovingly hand-crafted scapular, measuring 3.5 x 4.5 inches (9 x 11.5 cm) is made from purple wool, with appliqued design in red wool, cotton print and red cords, to a precise design: One side depicts the crucified Lord cradled by his Blessed Mother, an angel wiping his feet, the other side depicts the nails from the crucifixion. The scapular ties (approx 20 inches/50 cm in length) are purple and contain five knots. An explanatory booklet is provided, which includes prayers and the graces and benefits of the purple scapular, plus an account of the ecstasy of 23 August 1878 of Marie-Julie Jahenny in her own words with a full description of the symbolism of the scapular design.
