Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest Anniversary Pilgrimage

Day 1  FRIDAY – Dec. 4

Evening departure on an overnight flight from Chicago (via Zurich) or Newark (nonstop) to Rome, Italy.

Day 2  SATURDAY – Dec. 5

Morning arrival at Rome Fiumicino Airport and on to the Eternal City.  Stop at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls (see the chains that bound the Apostle St. Paul as a prisoner) before entering ancient Rome through the 3rd-century Aurelian Walls encircling its seven hills. Pass by Circus Maximus (the first Roman stadium and site of many early Christian martyrdoms), the Roman Colosseum (world’s oldest extant ampitheatre) and the Spanish Steps before arriving at Hotel Palazzo Cesi, a former 15th-century palace drenched in history at the very heart of Christendom, close to St. Peter’s Basilica.

Day 3  SUNDAY – Dec. 6

A Solemn High Mass in the Basilica of Saints Celsius and Julian offered by Monsignor Michael Schmitz, Vicar General of the Institute, will open the 30th anniversary celebrations. On Christmas Eve 2019, this 18th-century minor basilica was entrusted to the care of the Institute. Next we will walk to St. Peter’s Basilica crossing over the Tiber River by way of Ponte Sant’Angelo, the ancient bridge guarded by ten giant angels, designed by Bernini, the 17th-century master sculptor and architect of Italian Baroque. Passing by Castel Sant’Angelo (papal fortress for centuries) and up the Via  della Conciliazione (main avenue leading to St. Peter’s), we will arrive at the Piazza San Pietro, the grand facade of St. Peter’s Basilica, enclosed on two sides by Bernini’s giant marble semi-circular colonnades topped with 140 statues of saints. A 4000-year-old Egyptian obelisk at the center of the square was brought here under the papacy of Pope Sixtus V in 1586 and ”Christianized” with symbols of the Papacy. Inside the bronze cross at the top of the obelisk is a relic of the True Cross. In ancient days this ground was part of Nero’s Circus and the site of the first Christian persecutions in 65A.D.. Tradition holds that St. Peter the Apostle was crucified here.  A 4th-century basilica, Old St. Peter’s, was constructed by Emperor Constantine over the hallowed ground, using part of the existing foundation of the Circus, with its apse centered on St. Peter’s tomb (beneath the high altar). For centuries, St. Peter’s Basilica has been the beating heart of Christianity.  Among its many treasures are Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the Pieta, Bernini’s gilded bronze canopy and the 13th-century bronze statue of St. Peter.  A tradition amongst pilgrims has been to touch or kiss the foot of this statue, particularly the right one, and ask the first pope for a blessing. So many have done this over the last 800 years that the foot has worn down and become thin and flat.  A return to the Basilica of Saints Celsius and Julian over the Tiber for Pontifical Vespers.

Day 4  MONDAY – Dec. 7

Pontifical Mass and Te Deum in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Altar of the Chair with His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke.  Afternoon free. A walking excursion will be offered to the Piazza Navona (site of Bernini’s Four Rivers fountains), Church of St. Louis IX (national church of France with three Caravaggio paintings) and the Pantheon, a former pagan temple converted into a church dedicated to Our Lady. Pontifical Vespers at San Giovanni dei Fiorentini, a Baroque basilica with a relic of Saint Mary Magdalene.

Day 5  TUESDAY – Dec. 8

Feast of the Immaculate Conception – A very special day for the Institute as its work is placed under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception! Monsignor Gilles Wach will offer Holy Mass at Santa Maria in Aracoeli (Altar of Heaven), a titular basilica located on the highest summit of the Capitoline, the most important of the seven hills of Rome, overlooking the Roman Forum. This magnificent church is home to the Santo Bambino, a wooden figure of the Child Jesus said to be miraculous. The grand finale of the pilgrimage; a Candlelight Procession from Gesu e Maria on the Via del Corso to the Basilica Santa Maria Sopra Minerva (with a major relic of St. Catherine of Siena) where Pope Pius V formed the Holy League that protected the Christian West at the Battle of Lepanto. Leading the procession will be His Eminence, Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, followed by Monsignor Gilles Wach and all the Institute Family.

Day 6  WEDNESDAY – Dec. 9

Today we bid Rome farewell and fly home to Newark or Chicago.  Late afternoon arrival in the US.
